Who is Aleksandar Sørensen-Markovic?
In short I can sum up my triathlon life in one sentence: “I was a couch potato and am now a pro ironman athlete”.
That must have bee quit a journey you might think..and yes it has been with lots of ups and a few downs.
But given the transformation my life has gone through since I began swimming, biking and running lots of other things than results has made the greatest impact on my life as a triathlete.
I began doing running in 2001. At this time I was quite a big overweight..and I think it was very few people who would have thought pro ironman material when they saw me. I think at some points even my mother would have doubted I could do what I later did.

it’s me on the right.
Early beginning.
After having been on yet another bender in 2001 I woke up one july morning in my bed and realized something needed to change.
As a kid and teenager I had always been very into sports but in my late teens I explored what I still consider my greatest talent..partying and really when for it for some year.
But that morning when I woke up I realized two things.
a) Fernet Branca is no longer my favorite drink
b) I need to do something about my gut, my fitness and my life.
I made a quick decison to begin running.
The first run was one of the hardest I have ever done..and I walked for most of the 5k I had planned.
They say ignorace is a bliss and I was very ignorant at the time. I decided I wanted to do something I had wanted to do for as long as I could remember – run a marathon.
I signed up for a marathon in the town where I lived. I had a full 10 weeks to prepare..no worries. My background as a sport crazy kid really helped me out of that situaiton and I did in 3 hours and 42 minutes.
FInishing the marathon was at the time the coolest thing I had ever done in sports and I decieded I should be a runner.
So I began running ..a lot for like 4 weeks and got a runners knee so I began swimming because I did not want to loose my new healthy lifestyle- and it was not a pretty sight.
In early summer 2002 I finally could afford a bike and decided to give triathlon a shot. It was true love at first tri.
I decided to give it a honest shot.
I enjoyed training for fun until 2004. Here I did an ironman in Frankfurt and decided I should be on the podium the next time..again ignorance is a bliss.
I had finished Frankfurt in 9.53 which was great but still a long way to being top in my age group.
In 2005 I trained hard and began taking my trianing very serious. No more going out every weekend and I really discovered I loved the simple training life.
In 2005 I had unreal improvements and even won a half ironman in Germany but didn’t do an ironman because I wanted to be ready for podium before I did one again.

In 2006 I did Challenge-Roth and came in as 17 th overall in 8.43 and winner of my agegroup. Being on the podium the following day was still the proudest day of my sport life.
I am not quiet about my ambitioins because I have always belived in myself but so few belived I could pull off the challenge I had set myself in Frankfurt..only a very few knew I could do it – my coach at the time and the people around the team I was on – Team Endurancesport. That day in july was a fun day for all of us, and it taught me a very important thing..if you want something, go for it.
The following years have had it’s ups and downs and I still have not excelled to the next level. However I am confident that I am moving in the right direction and I keep working hard.
The most important thing for me is that I keep enjoying life and I have fun doing it.
